About Us
The Philadelphia Civic Symphony Orchestra at it’s inception was known for being a progressive organization of the 1930s/40s by playing with African-American soloists and choirs during a time when most musical groups were segregated. The Civic was also providing performance opportunities to young professionals beginning their careers. The 2022 rebirth of The Philadelphia Civic was driven by adopting the same inclusive goals but also expanding the offerings of a new 21st century equitable orchestra.
Diversity Statement
We are an intentionally diverse organization. We prioritize hiring musicians, composers, and administrators from historically under-represented groups. The Philadelphia Civic Symphony is an ensemble that commits to elevating the voices of the under-represented on stage and through audience engagement. We perform in venues around Philadelphia as a mobile orchestra increasing accessibility and affordability to symphonic performances for all.
The reestablished Philadelphia Civic Symphony will build their repertoire celebrating the works of under-represented composers both past and present. The ensemble is dedicated to being a pillar in the community for marginalized artists by providing training and support to young professionals and audiences by cultivating relationships with other like-minded organizations. We, through that collaboration, will create inclusive and equitable performance spaces for the LGTBQ+ community, those who identify as female/non-binary or transgender, and people of the global majority. We are champions of change - we are a civically minded orchestra.
